FIFA U-17 World Cup: Tim Weah proud of beauty in his goals against Paraguay

Tim Weah (2nd right) and Andrew Carleton (right) of USA celebrate the third goal against Paraguay during their FIFA U-17 World Cup round of 16 match at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.

Imagine the pressure of signing for a huge club like Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the age of 17. Add to that, the expectations that comes when your father is a former Ballon d’Or winner and a celebrated footballer. For Tim Weah, such pressures have been part and parcel of life.

However, Weah proved his credentials once again on Monday as his well-deserved hat-trick handed a mammoth 5-0 victory to USA in their FIFA U-17 World Cup round of 16 game against Paraguay. Weah was in brilliant touch throughout the game and when asked about his performance, he could not contain his excitement.

“I don’t score a lot of beautiful goals as most of them are tap-ins. But, I am really proud of my goals today and I would like to thank (Andrew) Carleton and Josh (Sargent) for their brilliant assists. It was really a special performance for me,” Weah said.

Tim Weah has playing well for the USA team in the last three games, but the lack of goals was a concern for the youngster. He was unable to find the back of the net even once through the group stages and considering USA’s attacking options, things were looking bleak for him.

It all changed on Monday as Weah showed the world once more what he is capable of. He opened his account in the 19th minute when he produced a good finish from a well-measured Ayo Akinola pass. However, his best finish came in the 53rd minute when he received the ball outside the box before curling it to the top right corner, leaving the Paraguay defence stunned.

“It was really an instinctive finish. I took a small turn after receiving the ball and my instinct told me to take the shot. I am glad it worked out for me,” he said.

It has been an important week for Weah’s family with his father -- football legend George Weah -- contesting the Liberian presidential elections. He is currently in Monrovia, the Liberian capital, and although he was unable to contact his father, Tim was sure he will be happy with the goals.
