The blast went off at the busy Pishin Stop triggering a fire on several vehicles parked nearby. Police and rescuers say at least a dozen people have been killed and 26 wounded who are being shifted to hospitals.
A state of emergency has been declared at the city’s hospitals where medics say some of the injured have life-threatening wounds. Bodies of the victims are charred beyond recognition.
A security cordon has been thrown around the area as fire engines reached the site to douse the blaze on the vehicles.
Police are not sure about the nature of the explosion as bomb disposal squad has been called in. However, according to some sources, it was a bomb attack and the target was a vehicle of security forces.
Windows of buildings in the neighbourhood have been shattered by the thud of the blast. Pishin Stop is a busy area which is dotted with hotels, restaurants and shops.
It is also a high-security zone which houses several important buildings, including FC Headquarters, Balochistan Assembly, Chief Minister House, Governor House and Balochistan High Court.
