Turkish PM cancels meeting with German FM, cites 'overload on agenda'

Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu stated on June 5 that a potential visit by German lawmakers to the NATO air base in the Central Anatolian province of Konya was currently possible, but he rejected any such visit to the İncirlik air base in the southern province of Adana in the near future.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Ankara, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said he was "saddened" by the decision, adding that Berlin would evaluate the proposed visit to the base in Konya.

He also stated that there was "no decision" yet taken over the possible relocation of German soldiers stationed at the İncirlik base.

“We want to solve the issue in through peaceful methods,” Gabriel said.

Germany has long demanded to visit the İncirlik base, where German soldiers are stationed as part of the anti-Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) campaign.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has reportedly canceled his meeting with Gabriel, citing "an overload" on his agenda.
