SC seeks JIT’s response over Hussain Nawaz’s leaked photo

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) has sought a reply from the Joint Investigation Team — tasked to investigate the Sharif family’s offshore assets, regarding a plea moved by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s son Hussain Nawaz for probing the leak of his picture during interrogation.

The apex court’s three-judge bench, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, asked Wajid Zia, the JIT head, on Wednesday to give input on Hussain’s fresh application against recording of video witnesses.

Earlier in the day, Hussain pleaded the top court to form a commission led by a retired or serving judge to probe the leak of his JIT picture. The prime minister’s son, through his counsel Khawaja Haris, also requested the apex court to stop the JIT from recording videos during interrogation.

“The photograph released is aimed at humiliating the petitioner and is a violation of his fundamental right to human dignity as guaranteed to him under Article 14 of the Constitution,” maintained Hussain.

The petition demanded the court “to direct the JIT members to immediately stop the video recording of its proceedings relating to recording of statements and interrogation of witness etc [and] to constitute an independent commission headed by a retired or sitting judge of the apex court to inquire into the circumstances leading to the leaking of the petitioner’s photograph on social media and to identify the person or persons responsible for the same.”

Last week, a picture of the premier’s eldest son waiting for a session with the JIT at the Federal Judicial Academy went viral on social media with government voicing its reservations over the leak. In a statement, Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Marriyum Aurangzeb said the modus operandi of the leak and its publication was regrettable, demeaning and a breach of investigation rules.

However, the opposition in the National Assembly questioned the motives behind the photo leak of Hussain while being quizzed about the Sharif family’s offshore assets, claiming it was a ‘deliberate move’ on behalf of the government.

JIT submits progress report

During Wednesday’s hearing, the JIT head along with other five members submitted the classified progress report before the bench. The probe body has reportedly highlighted problems and impediments being faced by its members during the investigation.

The bench asked Zia to file a separate application regarding the problems, hurdles faced by the JIT during the investigation and later the court would seek reply from Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Ashtar Ausaf Ali.

Reiterating its earlier observation, the bench once again emphasized that the investigation team should complete its work within the given timeframe of 60 days.

Later, the hearing was adjourned till Monday.
