Champions Trophy 2017 Final: We Were Outplayed in All Departments by Pakistan, Says Virat Kohli

London: India skipper Virat Kohli conceded that they were outplayed in all departments of the game after Pakistan completed a resounding 180-run victory to win their first Champions Trophy title at the Oval on Sunday.
Indian batting order collapsed spectacularly and the defending champions would have lost by a bigger margin had it not been for Hardik Pandya's quickfire 76. But rather than finding any excuses, the Indian captain said that they simply weren't good enough on the day when it mattered the most.

"Congratulations to Pakistan and their fans on this victory. The way they turned things around speaks volumes of the talent they have in their side. They can upset anyone on their day," said Kohli after the end of the match.

"Credit to Pakistan as they outplayed us in all departments of the game. We never took anyone lightly in this tournament and they were just more intense and more passionate than us on the day," he added.

The Indian captain also hailed the performance of his own team and stated that to be playing in the final means that they performed really well in the earlier stages of the tournament.

Disappointing to lose the final but I have a smile on my face because I am very proud of the boys. To be in the final, you need to have a good tournament, which the boys pulled off. We just weren't good enough on the day. We will take that on the chin and move on," said Kohli.

When asked about what he could have done differently in the final, Kohli said the bowling could have been better as there were not many wicket-taking opportunities during the Pakistan innings. Also, Kohli hit out at the Indian batsmen as they didn't show any kind of resistance during the chase and folded like a pack of cards.

"I think, with the ball, we could have had more wicket-taking opportunities. We have always tried to do our best but sometimes, the opposition does play very well," said the India skipper.

"Even with the ball, they were very aggressive. Hardik was outstanding but apart from that, we didn't show any resistance," he added.

During the Pakistan innings, India had a chance to get an early wicket as Jasprit Bumrah managed to find a faint edge off the southpaw Zaman's bat, which was caught by Dhoni. But Bumrah's old problem of bowling no balls at crucial moments resurfaced and Zaman got a reprieve. Zaman went onto notch his maiden century and was pivotal in Pakistan scoring over 300 runs.

But Kohli said such things are part and parcel of the game and they will just have to learn from the mistakes and move on.

"Small margins can be massive in cricket. We haven't won the final, have lost a game of cricket, and that's all. We need to move on and learn from our mistakes," Kohli said.

When asked about if he should have opted to bat first after winning the toss Kohli said: "Not at all. The pitch was consistent throughout. Didn't do anything strange or bad in either innings."
