Traumatised student was 'tortured', reveals medical probe

KARACHI: A 10-member medical board, constituted for health examination of a cadet college student in Larkana, has revealed that the child has undergone trauma, suggesting it could be an outcome of torture.

Muhammad Ahmed Hussain, a class VIII student of the college, is currently hospitalised at Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi after he reportedly went unconscious and fought for his life having undergone “severe torture” at the hands of the college staff.

A medical board was formed on the directives of Provincial Education Secretary Fazlullah Pechuho to investigate the ‘torture’ claim.

The board has now submitted its preliminary confidential report to the Sindh health secretary after examining Hussain.

“The child has laryngeal stenosis, which is a congenital [physical abnormality] or acquired narrowing of the airway that may affect the supraglottis [the area above the vocal cords], glottis, and/or subglottis,” an official, who requested not to be named, told The Express Tribune.

The official said that the student’s condition is usually caused by severe trauma, adding that the board has recommended the patient be sent to the United States, as the facility of such a surgery is not available in the country.

The source, however, said the claims of torture being made by the victim’s family were debatable, and could only be ascertained through further criminal or judicial inquiry with the help of forensic experts.

Student’s father Muhammad Rashid Mashori said his son has made remarkable recovery during the last one week.

“Even the doctors were surprised to witness Hussain’s recovery but the complete recovery was only possible through surgery,” Mashori said quoting the board.

The report has been sent to the health secretary and will be furnished to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who had earlier taken the notice of the incident last week. He assured Mashori that the entire cost of his child’s treatment would be borne by the provincial government.
